| The discovery of the process of
cultivating pearls at the beginning of the 20th century marked the
end of precious natural pearls. Kokichi Mikimoto of Japan is considered
the father of cultured pearls. He utilized the natural process of
the mollusk defending itself against foreign objects, and inserted
an artificial seed into oysters, which would then be encased in mother-of-pearl.
The process of culturing was refined over the years, and by 1926 “perles
cultivées” were officially recognized. The cultured pearl market was
