Tahitian Cultured Pearls |
 |
Tahitian cultured pearls
are dark South Sea pearls and come mainly from farms in French Polynesia.
They grow in the Cumingii species of the black-lipped Pinctada Margaritifera
oyster. These oysters are famous for their size and their ability
to produce black pearls. They are between 8 and 16 millimeters in
size. Pearls larger than 12 millimeters are difficult to cultivate
and those over 16 millimeters are extremely rare. Tahitian pearls
display an exciting range of colors from dark grey to anthracite,
green and aubergine. The metallic shine and changing shades of the
Tahitian pearl are particularly characteristic |
