Freshwater Cultured Pearls
Cultured freshwater pearls used to be grown almost exclusively in Japan’s Lake Biwa near Kyoto, on account of which they were known as Biwa pearls. Nowadays most of them are grown as non-nucleated cultured pearls on pearl farms in the rivers and lakes of China. They come in a wide range of shapes, often round or baroque. Their colours range from pale pink, to salmon orange, to brown-purple, and they vary in size from 2 to 12 mm, although cultured pearls that are larger than 8 mm are often grown using a nucleus. The growth phase of cultured freshwater pearls is between 1.5 and 4 years.
