South-Sea Cultured Pearls |
 |
Cultured pearls from
the South Sea are the most precious of all. They grow in the Pinctada
Maxima oyster which lives in the Indian and Pacific oceans, mainly
in Australian waters. This oyster can reach 30 centimeters in length
and 5 kilograms in weight. The pearls are also substantial, achieving
sizes of 8 to 16 millimeters through the strong coating of their outer
layers. South Sea cultured pearls larger than 13 millimeters are difficult
to cultivate and those over 17 millimeters are extremely rare. They
are the queens of pearls with a color spectrum from silvery and pinkish
whites to fine cream and champagne tones to a deep gold. |
